About / Our History
From ice-cream makers to furniture lovers, our family’s Italian decent ensured an envious work ethic and passionate nature and when an opportunity arose to take on a beloved Uncle’s antique emporium, we embraced the chance to combine in house creative joinery skills with a love of design.
Millhouse was born therefore in 1989 in a disused mill in Kirkstall, Leeds. Cabinet makers by trade, we would enthusiastically make more or less anything the customer desired. As time evolved and our customer’s tastes changed, we moved into a traditional shop to showcase our wares properly and we almost became a proper furniture retail store - but not quite!
Our big break came when we took on a huge gamble. In 2001 we spotted a run down, neglected farm property, complete with ramshackle buildings and barns - seemingly isolated, completely neglected - but next to the M1. The vision we had took a heap of blood, sweat and tears to make real, but we got there in the end. Kirkstall became history, and by the time we had moved into our new home, we were still busy making and doing and our retail side grew and grew. By 2008 we moved our manufacturing off site to devote more space for people to shop - and to this day we are still proud to create a substantial amount of our own unique designed furniture.
